Colombian President Gustavo Petro has ordered a halt to information sharing with U.S. security agencies as President Donald Trump’s administration continues to fire missiles at ships in the Caribbean.
“An order has been issued to all levels of the intelligence services of the public security forces to suspend communications and other transactions with the US security services,” Petro said on Tuesday’s X news agency, adding that the suspension “will remain in effect as long as missile attacks on ships continue.”

The Colombian leader also shared a post on unconfirmed media reports that Britain has taken similar action to Bogotá over legal concerns related to the ongoing US attack that has so far killed at least 75 people.
Petro has called on President Trump to be investigated for war crimes over airstrikes targeting drug smuggling ships that he says affected the citizens of Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Leftist leaders have long criticized U.S. drug policy, accusing the Trump administration of going after farmers who grow coca, the raw material for cocaine, rather than targeting big drug traffickers and money launderers.
Petro said Sunday he met with the families of Colombian fishermen who were said to have died in the strike.
“He may have been transporting fish, or he may have been transporting cocaine, but he has not received a death sentence,” Petro said Sunday at a summit of Latin American and European Union leaders hosted by Colombia. “There was no need to kill him.”
The Trump administration has accused Petro of being soft on traffickers and criticized the Colombian president’s decision to exempt Colombian rebel leaders involved in drug trafficking from extradition to the United States.
This is not the first time Trump and Petro have clashed. Colombia’s president left the United States in September within hours of Washington revoking his visa for “reckless and seditious actions” while in New York attending the United Nations General Assembly.
Earlier in the day, Petro spoke to a crowd protesting Israel’s war in Gaza outside United Nations headquarters, calling on U.S. soldiers to “disobey President Trump’s orders” and “obey the orders of humanity.”
“Revoking a visa for condemning genocide shows that the United States no longer respects international law,” he said in response to the visa revocation.
Most recently, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Petro, his family, and South America’s interior minister, Armando Benedetti, for failing to rein in Colombia’s cocaine industry and evading criminal organization accountability.
Petro’s announcement Tuesday came as a U.S. aircraft carrier arrived in the Caribbean, increasing speculation that the Trump administration is considering escalating military action in the region, primarily targeting the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, a longtime rival of the United States.
The Pentagon confirmed that the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which includes the world’s largest aircraft carrier, has arrived in the Caribbean carrying at least 4,000 sailors and “tactical aircraft.”
