Sumeet Banerjee has resigned as director of the BBC, criticizing the organization’s governance problems, in another blow to the organization just weeks after stepping down as director-general.

The BBC confirmed Ms Banerjee’s resignation on Friday, saying she had stepped down just weeks before the end of her four-year term.

In her resignation letter, Banerjee said she was dissatisfied with governance issues at the organization, according to BBC News.

He also said he had not been consulted about key developments surrounding the sudden resignations of director general Tim Davie and chief executive Deborah Turness, according to BBC News.

Both men resigned on Nov. 9 amid mounting criticism of the station’s handling of political reporting, including the editing of a speech given shortly before Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

“There is no legal basis.”

On November 13, the BBC apologized for the way it edited the investigative program Panorama. However, he argued that there was “no legal basis” for Trump to sue for defamation.

The controversy centers on the Panorama documentary “Trump: A Second Chance?,” which aired in October 2024, just days before Trump secured re-election.

The film spliced together two separate lines from President Trump’s Jan. 6 speech nearly an hour apart, giving the impression that Trump was telling his supporters to “fight like hell” while heading to the Capitol.

President Trump and his allies claim the actions were misleading and removed important context from the speech.

They claim Trump told the crowd to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard” and encouraged supporters to “support our brave senators, congressmen and women.” The redacted version suggested a more direct incitement to violence, they say.

The scandal has brought increased scrutiny of the BBC at a time when it was already grappling with accusations of internal bias following the leak of internal memos.
