On October 30, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump shakes hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a bilateral meeting at Gimhae International Airport on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Busan, South Korea.

President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday morning, a White House official confirmed to CNBC.

Details about the call, including why it was scheduled and who requested it, were not immediately clear. The White House did not provide details about what was discussed.

However, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that “both sides have implemented all elements of the agreement” when the two leaders met in Busan, South Korea, late last month.

The deal included conditions to reduce the temperature of the ongoing trade war, including the U.S. agreeing to lower tariffs on Chinese goods and China agreeing to suspend new export restrictions on rare earth minerals.

In a statement Monday translated by NBC News, the Chinese government said that since the Busan meeting, “China-US relations have generally maintained a stable and positive trajectory.”

President Trump and President Xi also discussed Ukraine. Ukraine is currently in talks with the United States over a peace plan, and the Trump administration hopes Kiev will reach an agreement by Thanksgiving.

According to a reading of the call by the Chinese government, Xi “underscored China’s support for all efforts leading to peace.”

The Chinese leader also reiterated his country’s view that Taiwan should be “returned to China.”

Trump said the United States “understands how important the Taiwan issue is to China,” according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

According to the ministry, President Trump also said in the phone call that Mr. Xi is a “great leader.”
