Christian McCaffrey gained 142 yards from scrimmage and scored a touchdown in his first game against Carolina since being traded three years ago, leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 20-9 victory over the Panthers on Monday night.
McCaffrey’s stellar night helped the 49ers (8-4) overcome three first-half interceptions by Brock Purdy and stay in playoff contention heading into the stretch run of the season.
Bryce Young and the Panthers (6-6) struggled to capitalize on opportunities a week after he threw for a franchise-record 448 yards in a win at Atlanta. Young threw for just 169 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but Carolina missed a chance to take sole possession of first place in the NFC South.
After Purdy’s tough start to the game, the 49ers were conservative in the second half, relying primarily on McCaffrey and short passes. The strategy worked, as McCaffrey scored on a 12-yard run to make it 17-3, and the Niners added a Matt Gay field goal.
“Obviously, it’s always good when you see familiar faces, before the game and after the game,” McCaffrey said. “But it’s a whole new team from when I was there. So it’s really just business once the ball is in the air.”
Young connected on a big play with a 29-yard TD pass to Tetairoa McMillan, but Carolina was unable to convert a two-point try after a penalty shifted the ball to one point.
Young then threw his second interception of the game to Ziair Brown, with Carolina in scoring position 20-9.
The frustration of the loss led to an altercation late in the game when Carolina safety Trevon Mehrig punched San Francisco receiver Jauan Jennings in the groin after a run play, and Jennings retaliated with a punch to the helmet after the game.
“I was just reacting to childish behavior,” Jennings said.
McCaffrey, who has revolutionized the 49ers’ offense since being acquired in October 2022, had his 10th 100-yard game of the season, rushing for 89 yards and receiving for 53 yards, moving him just two shy of the franchise record set in 2023.
The 49ers gave McCaffrey the ball on the first five plays of the game, leading to his first go-ahead drive TD of the season against Carolina. Purdy connected on a 12-yard pass to Jauan Jennings for the score.
After that, the two crimes did nothing. Purdy became the first player all season to throw three interceptions in the first half (two of which were recorded by Jaycee Horn), but the Panthers converted them into just three points. Young ruined his first drive when he was intercepted by Brown on a first down play.
Both teams traded field goals, with the Niners leading 10-3 at the half.
