Prosecutors in Georgia have dropped pending charges against Donald Trump over alleged interference in the 2020 election by the US president and his allies.

Judge Scott McAfee on Wednesday granted the request to dismiss the charges, ending the latest round of criminal charges against Trump.

“This lawsuit is hereby dismissed in its entirety,” McAfee wrote.

Trump faced four indictments in 2024 while out of office. Only one case in New York state proceeded to trial.

He was found guilty of falsifying business records in connection with hush-money payments to adult film actresses and was sentenced to “unconditional discharge,” avoiding any penalties such as fines, probation, or imprisonment.

Two federal charges against Trump, one for election interference and the other for mishandling classified government documents, were dropped after Trump was re-elected as president last November.

Prosecutors in the Georgia case had already faced a setback when Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was disqualified for having a romantic relationship with one of her senior deputies.

The lawsuit in Georgia centers on President Trump’s phone call with the state’s top elections official, Brad Raffensperger, after the 2020 vote, in which he said he wanted to “get 11,780 votes” to overturn the election.

President Trump had rejected the victory of his successor, former President Joe Biden, falsely claiming widespread voter fraud was behind the results.

In 2023, Willis accused Trump and 16 of his allies of extortion and a series of voting-related crimes for challenging the state’s election results.

The US president, who made a successful return to the White House earlier this year, has always denied any wrongdoing in the case against him, calling it a politically motivated “witch hunt.”

This is breaking news. More details to come…
