Disney’s Zootopia 2 follows detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they become entangled in the tortuous trail of a mysterious reptile that turns the mammalian metropolis of Zootopia upside down.

There were enough choices at the Thanksgiving box office to make for one of the best holiday performances ever.

led disney’s “Zootopia 2” brought in an estimated $156 million, but secured about $294 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. That number won’t be finalized until Monday, when all Sunday ticket sales are counted, but it would be the third or fourth-highest Thanksgiving sales of all time.

The current fourth-highest Thanksgiving box office gross is 2012 with $291.3 million, and third is 2013 with $294.2 million, according to ComScore data.

Although 2025’s Thanksgiving box office revenue was lower than 2018’s $315.6 million and 2024’s record-breaking $424.9 million, it still set a record.

IMAX reported that the five-day Thanksgiving weekend was the best ever, with worldwide ticket sales of $40.8 million, 70% more than the previous record set during the same period in 2024.

“‘Zootopia 2’ and ‘Wicked: For Good’ delivered an incredible one-two punch during the Thanksgiving holiday season. They were perfect hits with family audiences and our global box office far exceeded our expectations,” IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said in a statement Sunday.

Disney also achieved some benchmarks.

Biggest anime box office revenue in history

“Zootopia 2” had the highest worldwide opening ever for an animated film, with an estimated box office revenue of $556 million. According to the company’s report, this is the fourth highest number in world open history.

Paul Dergarabedian, Head of Marketplace Trends at comScore, told CNBC: “The combination of the Disney brand, a gorgeous PG-rated family film, and a beloved original production led to the incredible global performance of ‘Zootopia 2,’ which helped the film gross more than $500 million worldwide.” “This film has truly cracked the code of what family audiences around the world are looking for when they go to the cinema.”

Additionally, the animated sequel had the second-highest Thanksgiving Day and Thanksgiving opening numbers in both the five-day and three-day periods. The current record holder is 2024’s Moana 2, which grossed $221 million in five days over Thanksgiving and $135.5 million in three days.

universal “Wicked: For Good” added an estimated $93 million in domestic box office revenue during the five-day Thanksgiving period, less than “Wicked”’s $118 million during the same period in 2024.

Still, box office experts expected “Wicked: For Good” and “Zootopia 2” to continue to drive ticket sales in the weeks before Christmas and ahead of the release of Disney’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”

Dergarabedian said: “This weekend is gearing up for a strong year-end finale at the box office, with a wide variety of movies scheduled, including high-profile blockbusters and awards contenders…This is a welcome outcome after a very tumultuous late summer season for the industry.”

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal, which owns CNBC. With Comcast’s planned Versant spinoff, Versant will become CNBC’s new parent company.
