Amad Diallo and Brian Mbeumo have told Sky Sports that winning the Premier League title is a dream that Manchester United can achieve over the next few years, despite their limited form.
United fought back from goal difference to win away to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday, but continued to be held back by inconsistency under head coach Ruben Amorim.
They have managed to beat both Liverpool and Chelsea this season, but the embarrassment of losing to 10-a-side Everton is still fresh in the minds of fans and Amorim.
With the signing of Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, the quality of their forward line has improved, with Amad also showing brilliant performances, and although they are in seventh place in the Premier League, they are only four points behind second-placed Manchester City.
The club’s future is bright, according to Mbeumo and Amado, who have formed a good partnership on the right flank this season and spoke exclusively to Sky Sports ahead of Thursday’s game against West Ham.
When asked about United’s level in two years’ time, Amad said: “To be honest, why don’t we win the league? Is it possible to dream?”
Mbeumo added: “If you come to Manchester United you want to win titles and the Premier League is one of them, so why not?”
Amorim was in charge of his 40th Premier League game against Palace, averaging 1.18 points per game, which remains significantly lower than previous manager Erik ten Hag’s average of 1.72 points per game.
However, results and performances have improved this season, with United scoring 21 goals in 13 games and scoring 1.61 points per game.
Amad has changed his mind after last season’s lowest-ever finish in 15th place in the Premier League and believes the team is heading in the right direction under Amorim.
He said: “From an individual perspective, I think we’ve improved a lot, especially as a team, because I remember some of the games last season were not easy for us.”
“We went into the game thinking we had already lost the game, but this season is different. The mindset is different, the energy is different.
“I think we’re growing because we’re coming into the game and we feel like we can win this game and our staff is helping us take that step.
“We are not very happy with the current standings, but we will improve. All I can say is that I am sure we will be better in the next games.”
“I think we’re a different team now. We know this season is different than last season. We’re playing one game a week, so we have to try to do better every game.”
“The mindset is positive in the dressing room. We are a different team. Bruno[Fernandes]is the leader,[Harry]Maguire, everyone, Brian too.
“I think the energy is positive. To be honest, it’s much better than last season. Like I said, we want to do better every game and we’re committed to doing that.”
Mbeumo, who joined from Brentford in the summer, has adapted quickly to life at United and is the club’s top scorer in the Premier League this season with five goals.
Although the move from west London to Manchester looked easy, Mbeumo revealed it was anything but.
He said: “First of all, it wasn’t easy.
“I think I just rely on hard work, training and what I’m doing off the pitch and on the side to have every chance to do well here. The whole team has helped me a lot to grow as a player here and find my place and find my place in the team.”
Amad and Mbeumo developed a strong understanding on United’s right flank, playing as wing-back and winger respectively, to good effect in the final third.
Their chemistry was evident when Amad provided the assist for Mbeumo’s opening goal in a 2-1 win against Liverpool at Anfield. He scored again in the opening game, a 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
“We have a good relationship,” Mbemo said.
“He helped me when I came. Obviously we speak the same language, so it was easy to go with him. He told me a little bit about what works well here as well, so I think we built a relationship from day one.”
He added: “It’s easy to find a connection because we speak the same language so we can talk about what happened. It’s easier because sometimes even during a game he wants the ball somewhere. I know that and it’s the same for me.”
“Even after the game, we can talk about the offensive plays that could have been better.”
The pair hope to continue deepening their mutual understanding during Thursday’s home match against West Ham, as Manchester United aim for a come-from-behind victory against Palace.
