Meta signs commercial AI data agreement with publisher to provide real-time news on Meta AI

Meta has signed a commercial AI data agreement with a news publisher to provide real-time global news, entertainment news, and breaking news on its AI chatbot, Meta AI. From now on, when users ask a Meta AI news-related question, information and links from a variety of content sources will appear, helping users discover timely and relevant content, the company announced Friday.

These responses also include links to articles, so users can visit the publisher’s website for more information. The company says this will allow its partners to reach new audiences.

Meta is affiliated with CNN, Fox News, Fox Sports, Le Monde Group, People Inc.’s media brand portfolio, The Daily Caller, The Washington Examiner, and USA Today.

The company plans to add new partnerships in the future.

The move comes as Meta shifts away from making its platform a hub for news. For example, Facebook’s “News” tab will be retired in 2024. Additionally, Meta stopped compensating news publishers in 2022, but is now doing so to empower AI chatbots with real-time access to news.

“We are committed to making Meta AI even more responsive, accurate, and balanced,” Meta wrote in a blog post. “It can be difficult for current AI systems to respond to real-time events, but by integrating more and different types of news sources, our aim is to improve meta-AI’s ability to deliver timely and relevant content and information across a variety of perspectives and content types.”

The company is trying to attract more users to its AI chatbots as it faces increased competition from rivals. Meta also hopes to remain relevant in the AI race after the controversial release of Llama 4 earlier this year, which received complaints of poor performance.
