First-half goals from Bruno Guimarães and Anthony Gordon gave them a 2-1 win as 10-a-side Burnley moved closer to elimination with a sixth straight defeat.

The Newcastle captain took the lead with a stunning first goal from a corner kick, before Lucas Pires’ red-card tackle left Burnley with one man down.

Leslie Ugochukwu’s inexplicable handball in the box was penalized after a VAR review, and Gordon was able to convert the first of the two penalties awarded by VAR into a handball, but Jeanne Fleming’s late spot-kick was not enough for the Clarets to score.

Burnley put Newcastle in trouble early on with a series of corner kicks that circled substitute goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale each time, but it was the Magpies who broke the deadlock from a set piece. Guimarães’ audacious shot went over former teammate Martin Dubravka to give Newcastle a deserved lead after 30 minutes.

From there on, Newcastle dominated. In a superb performance, Gordon threaded the ball through the Burnley defence, sending Anthony Elanga over goal and a deft tackle from Pires forced Stuart Attwell to send off the left-back.

The first half was even worse for Burnley. Ugochukwu unnecessarily handballed Gordon’s cross with both hands inside the box, forcing the referee, who was sent to the monitor by VAR, to point to the spot.

In the second half, when Yoan Wissa made his debut from the bench, Newcastle dominated the game until stoppage time, but then, after another on-field review, Malick Thiau’s handball was decided, and Fleming scored a spot goal, giving Burnley a glimmer of hope.

Parker’s side almost grabbed a miraculous point when Laurent and Fleming almost crossed for the final kick of the game.

The result moves Newcastle into the top half of the table, while Burnley sit in 19th place, four points behind them.

Howe: It wasn’t the best performance.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said after the game:

“Obviously it was a tough ending to the game. We conceded a penalty with very little time left. After that, the whole game changed. The extra man advantage disappeared.”

“But we got over the line and won the game and that’s all that matters.

“We were a poor starter today. We grew into it. Bruno (Guimarães) scored a great goal. Our plan today was to put the ball into the goalkeeper.”

“There were some bright spots in our play, but it wasn’t good enough from our point of view, but we know it wasn’t our best performance.

But we won, we got 10 points out of 12 and we’re moving in the right direction.”

What will happen in the Premier League?
