Manchester United moved up to sixth place in the Premier League table with an emphatic 4-1 victory over bottom club Wolves at Molineux.
Bruno Fernandes’ opener was canceled out by Jean-Richner Bellegarde before half-time, but second-half goals from Brian Mbeumo, Mason Mount and a penalty from Fernandes took the game away from a hapless Wolves side, better reflecting United’s dominance.
Rob Edwards remains scoreless in his four games in charge, leaving Wolves floating at the foot of the table with 13 points left in the safe zone. Reuben Amorim’s side achieved their first consecutive away wins in the Premier League and moved into the top six.
Many Wolves supporters protested the club’s ownership and missed the first 15 minutes of the match, but they did not miss a Wolves side who looked lacking in quality and confidence in the early stages, but United broke through with ease.
Diogo Dalot wasted a one-on-one and Sam Johnstone also saved from Mbeumo before Casemiro snatched the ball from the darting Andre and the ball passed to Fernandes. Fernandes slipped through but had enough time to get up and slip past the goalkeeper.
Toti Gomez had to come off Matheus Cunha’s line and return against his old club, but Wolves had their sights set on him at that point. But, as was often the case under Amorim, United surrendered control and allowed the bottom club to return.
The home side sensed this and Ki-Jana Hoever’s cross was pushed into goal by David Moller-Wolf, who was Wolves’ best player before being sent off injured, Bellegarde, who played the ball back into the box and smartly slotted it home. It was Edwards’ first goal in his fourth game.
However, some unlucky defending by Wolves saw United regain the lead early in the second half, with Dalot running down the left channel again, allowing Mbeumo to press into the goal, leaving Johnston stranded to score his first goal in exactly a month.
Fernandes had a momentary opportunity to score the third goal by sinking the ball into the path of Mount, but Elson Mosquera was judged to have handed it inside the area, allowing Fernandes to score the second goal from the penalty spot. The wolves were well beaten.
Their fate seems already decided in December.
What awaits Amorim’s United this season remains a mystery.
Best player: Bruno Fernandes
Fellow playmaker James Madison praised Fernandez in the Monday Night Football studio. “Bruno Fernandes is underrated for the stability he shows on a regular basis,” said the Tottenham player. “Every time he steps on the ball, he can see everything.”
Fernandes proved that by assisting Mount’s goal. He punished Wolves, contributing six goals and nine assists, having been involved in 15 goals in the last 14 Premier League games against a team that started in the relegation zone as Manchester United.
Mount: We know it can be done
Manchester United’s Mason Mount told Sky Sports:
“I thought some of the combinations coming up were crisp and sharp and that’s what we can do.
“We know we can do it. It’s important as a forward player to create as many chances as possible and get on the scoresheet. I thought we were solid going forward. Defensively, it’s about defending as a team and not giving them a chance to get back into the game.”
