The Trump administration on Monday announced a new initiative called the US Tech Force, which will be made up of about 1,000 engineers and other professionals working on artificial intelligence infrastructure and other technology projects across the federal government.

According to the government’s official website, participants will work on a two-year employment program “in partnership with leading technology companies” and with teams reporting directly to agency leaders.

Those “private sector partners” include: Amazon Web Services, apple, google public sector, Dell Technologies, microsoft, Nvidiaopen AI, oracle, Palantir, sales force And so on, the website says.

Tech Force marks the Trump administration’s increasing focus on developing America’s AI infrastructure as it competes with China for supremacy in the burgeoning industry.

The initiative was announced four days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at establishing a national AI policy framework. That’s a priority for industry leaders, who had opposed states developing their own regulations.

After Tech Force members complete two terms, they can seek full-time employment with companies that have committed to considering program graduates for employment. Private partners may also nominate employees to perform government service duties.

Annual salary will likely be in the $150,000 to $200,000 range, plus benefits.

“We’re working to restructure our workforce to make sure we have the right people on the right problems,” Scott Cooper, director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Monday morning.

The technology unit will work on “high-impact technology initiatives such as AI implementation, application development, data modernization, and the delivery of digital services across federal agencies,” the site said.
