Merriam-Webster on Monday declared “slop” the word of the year for 2025, a sign of growing wariness about artificial intelligence.

According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, slop is currently defined as “low-quality digital content, typically produced in large quantities by artificial intelligence.” The word has previously been used primarily to mean “product of little value” or “food waste fed to animals.”

Mainstream social networks are flooded with AI-generated content, including what 404 Media described as “a video of strange creatures turning into spiders and then nightmarish giraffes inside a crowded shopping mall,” which the publication reports has been viewed more than 362 million times on Metaapp.

In September, Meta launched Vibes, another feed of AI-generated videos. A few days later, OpenAI released the Sora app. These services, like TikTok, YouTube, etc., are increasingly leveraging AI and can generate revenue if there is enough engagement.

Spotify announced in September that it would be required to remove more than 75 million AI-generated “spam tracks” from its service and roll out formal policies to protect artists from AI impersonation and deception. The streaming company faced widespread criticism after The Velvet Sundown reached 1 million monthly listeners without initially disclosing that their songs were produced by generative AI. The artist later revealed on his profile page that this is a “synthetic music project.”

According to the latest National Economic Survey released by CNBC on December 15th, fewer respondents are using AI platforms such as ChatGPT. microsoft with co-pilot google Gemini has been in the last 2-3 months compared to summer.

Just 48% of those surveyed said they had recently used an AI platform, down from 53% in August.
