A new poll shows the number of Americans who approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president has fallen to 39% amid growing concerns about the state of the economy.

President Trump’s approval rating is down about 2 percentage points from 41% earlier this month, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday, a decline driven in part by growing economic dissatisfaction among Trump’s own Republicans.

Just 33% of respondents expressed support for President Trump’s handling of economic issues, the lowest level since he took office for the second time in January.

Growing affordability fears could be a serious political liability for Mr. Trump and his allies, who campaigned on a promise to address inflation and cost-of-living concerns in 2024.

A recent Politico poll found that Americans have high levels of anxiety about spending on things like health care, food and housing, with 55% of respondents saying President Trump’s policies are partly to blame for rising food prices.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll also suggested that President Trump’s approval rating on the cost of living issue has fallen to 27% from 31% in early December. Among Republicans, approval for the economic response fell from 78% to 72%.

“Golden Age”

President Trump has denied that rising prices are squeezing Americans, calling affordability concerns a “hoax” by hostile media coverage and Democratic rivals and insisting the U.S. economy is in a “golden age.” President Trump said in remarks last week that inflation was “under control” and “prices are way down.”

Some Democrats were pleased to see President Trump repeat the claims of his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, who was criticized during his 2021-2025 presidential term for claiming that Americans’ complaints about inflation and the cost of living were exaggerated.

Although President Trump’s approval rating has fallen from a high of 47% when he returned to the White House, it has remained relatively stable over the past few months, with slight fluctuations between the high 30s and low 40s.
