Armando Broja’s late goal earned Burnley a 1-1 draw, denying Bournemouth their first Premier League win since October.
The Albanian international nodded in Marcus Edwards’ cross in what could be a crucial point in the relegation battle for the Clarets. This was Burnley’s only shot on target.
Bournemouth also only have themselves to blame for squandering chances despite seeing good points in possession. Antoine Semenyo scored with the first shot on target of the game, which coincidentally was the only shot for the Cherries.
He took advantage of Josh Laurent’s slip and landed a sweet blow. Bournemouth will be grateful to have Semenyo through a busy period as Ghana missed out on qualification for the African Cup of Nations, but whether Semenyo will still be at the club come January deadline is another question.
Most of Bournemouth’s 16 shots missed Martin Dubravka and went off target. David Brooks had plenty of chances, but Semenyo and Justin Kluivert were also wasted.
Burnley were also given a caution towards the end of the first half when they had the ball in the back of the net. Jadon Anthony, returning to his old club, turned back a cross from Laurent, but the linesman’s flag was offside. VAR took quite a long time to consider and stuck to on-field decisions.
This means Bournemouth’s winless streak extends to eight games. Their last win was against Nottingham Forest on October 26th, and their last three games have been draws. They sit in 14th place with 22 points and there was some booing around the full-time Vitality Stadium.
Burnley improved to 11 points but remained second from bottom, five points behind safety. This was their first point in seven games in the Premier League.
Iraora: This was a game we needed to win.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola told Sky Sports: “It’s not the result we wanted. We controlled the game, but when you don’t control the game, things like this can happen.”
“Our first mistake was not stopping the game. We had enough chances to score the second goal and we didn’t do it. We were controlling the game and didn’t take our chances, but in stoppage time they had to put everyone forward and we conceded the goal. It was a big penalty for us.”
“In the final moments, we had some chances where we didn’t know whether to defend more compactly or use the space to make it 1-0, but we conceded set-pieces.
“In recent games we have conceded a lot of goals from set pieces and that punished us today.
“We’re struggling with our marking. We’re not a very tall team, so sometimes the matchups aren’t good for us. I think that happened today and it hurt us in the last game.”
“It’s definitely the most disappointing (out of the last three draws)…this is a game we needed to win.
“Three points, it’s not that much in this game, but one point is better than a loss, but in the end a win will move you up the table and now it’s costing us a lot.”
“We can’t think too much about the goals we conceded (in eight games without a win). Let’s take each game in the moment and think about the next game, which is Brentford.”
Parker: We deserved to score.
Burnley manager Scott Parker told Sky Sports: “It was definitely a valuable point today. There was a lot of pressure coming in here but we have certainly delivered so far.”
“They put a lot of pressure on this very young team and we were in a tough situation. We deserved a point today and I’m really happy.”
“I don’t think anyone watching us this year will ever question the spirit and fight of this group. We’ll be fighting for the majority of the season, but that fight and unity will always be there. That fight got us back in this game and earned us the point at home.”
“We’ve scored some stupid goals (this season), we’ve conceded some stupid chances and we haven’t given ourselves the opportunity to win it in the game.
“Today we came here to be defensive and not give Bournemouth space and it worked really well. We lost a little bit of something in the attacking phase, but if you stay solid you always have a chance to get something back and it showed.”
“This is a break in our run so far. We have another big game coming up at home against Everton and we have to use this momentum and build on the positive results we haven’t had in recent weeks. That’s what happened this time and we need to build on that from now on.”
