US President Donald Trump said, “The United States has conducted airstrikes against ISIL (ISIS) fighters in northwestern Nigeria.”

“Tonight, at my direction as Commander-in-Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly offensive against the remnants of ISIS terrorists in northwestern Nigeria,” President Trump said in a post on the Truth social platform Thursday night.

President Trump said ISIL fighters “target and viciously kill primarily innocent Christians” at levels not seen in years, or even centuries.

“I have previously warned terrorists that if they do not stop their slaughter of Christians, they will face the consequences of hell, and tonight that happened,” Trump said.

The U.S. military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM), which is responsible for operations in Africa, said in a post on X that the airstrike was carried out “at the request of Nigerian authorities” and killed “multiple ISIS terrorists.”

The U.S. military action comes weeks after President Trump announced he had ordered the Pentagon to begin planning for potential military action in Nigeria following allegations of persecution of Christians in the country.

The Nigerian government says armed groups are targeting both Muslim and Christian communities in the country, and the United States argues that Christians face persecution not because of the complex security situation but because they are ignoring efforts by Nigerian authorities to protect religious freedom.

The US State Department just recently announced visa restrictions for Nigerians and their families who have been involved in mass murder and violence against Christians in the West African country.

President Trump issued the attack on Christmas Day while vacationing at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

This is breaking news. It will continue soon.
