Egypt 1 – 0 South Africa

Mohamed Salah scored again as Egypt’s 10-a-side side secured a 1-0 win over South Africa in Group B of the African Cup of Nations, sealing their place at the top of the table.

Three days after scoring the winning goal in stoppage time to seal a come-from-behind win against Zimbabwe, Salah stepped up for his side again after converting the penalty home after being caught by Chryso Mdau’s loose arm in the area before the break.

Mohamed Hany scored his second of the match two minutes later, but Egypt remained three points clear of their Group B leaders despite being down to 10 men.

The Pharaohs will face Angola, who have only one point from their opening two games, in their final group match on December 29, but after a strong start to the tournament, AFCON’s tie-break rules ensure they are top of Group B.

They are three points behind Bafana Bafana, so if Egypt loses to Angola and South Africa beats Zimbabwe, they will be tied on points.

However, AFCON rules state that head-to-head results will be taken into account instead of goal difference, and Friday’s 1-0 win against South Africa will ensure Salah and his team top spot.
