Several people were killed and others injured in a fire at a New Year’s party at an Alpine ski resort in southern Switzerland, a police spokesperson said on Thursday.

“The fire broke out at around 1:30 a.m. at Le Constellation Lounge Bar in Crans-Montana,” said Gaetan Lathion, a spokesperson for the Valais cantonal police.

“There are several people injured and several people killed.”

Police did not provide an exact number of casualties or details about the cause of the fire in the area, which is known as a luxury resort area.

A press conference will be held by police and the district attorney at around 10 a.m. (4 a.m. Eastern time).

One of Switzerland’s most exclusive locations, Crans-Montana is famous for its year-round sunshine due to its location on a south-facing plateau in the Rhône Valley.

At 1,500 meters above sea level, this area offers panoramic views of the Alps, stretching from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc, one of Europe’s highest peaks.

Tourists are drawn to its low-key charm, including its expansive ski slopes and vibrant après-ski scene, as well as its high-end shopping and fine dining.

With a small population of about 15,000 people, the area has a close-knit community and is said to be a low-key destination for celebrities to ski, golf, and dine.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
