U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaks to the media next to U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth during a House of Representatives briefing on the situation in Venezuela on January 7, 2026, at the Capitol in Washington, DC, USA.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Wednesday that he will meet with Danish officials next week about Greenland.

Rubio’s comments about the Capitol came as the Trump administration has increasingly spoken out about taking over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

He was asked why the government had not accepted Denmark’s request for talks on the island.

Mr. Rubio responded, “I’m going to meet with them next week.”

Mr. Rubio was asked by a reporter whether he would withdraw the option of sending U.S. troops to occupy Greenland.

“I’m not here to talk about Denmark or military intervention,” Rubio said, reiterating his plans to meet with Danish officials next week.

“We will discuss it with them then, but we are not adding anything further today.”

The White House said President Donald Trump and his advisers are considering a “wide range of options” to acquire Greenland, which could include military options.

“President Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority for the United States and deterring adversaries in the Arctic is critical,” White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt told CNBC in an email Tuesday.

“The President and his team have discussed various options for pursuing this important foreign policy objective, and of course the use of U.S. military forces is always an option at the discretion of the commander in chief,” Levitt said.
