Google Classroom’s new tool uses Gemini to turn lessons into podcast episodes

Google has introduced a new way to capture the attention of students, who are avid podcast listeners. Now available on Google Classroom. Teachers can use new Gemini-powered tools that generate podcast-style audio lessons aimed at fostering deeper understanding of the material.

First, educators simply navigate to the (Gemini) tab within Google Classroom. There, you can choose from a variety of customization options, including choosing the appropriate grade level, defining topics, and setting clear learning goals. You can then further customize your audio experience by choosing the number of speakers and different conversational styles such as interviews, roundtable discussions, and casual conversations.

This new feature is currently available to users enrolled in Google Workspace Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus.

By bringing this familiar format into the classroom, teachers can engage students. Research shows that students spend a lot of time listening to podcasts, with an estimated 35 million monthly Gen Z listeners in the United States.

Additionally, the popularity of podcasts as an educational resource is rapidly increasing. Many universities are now producing their own podcasts, and students are increasingly seeking out popular educational series on their own time. Podcast-style lessons also have the potential to encourage independent learning, as students can play episodes whenever they need a review or miss class.

However, teachers are still grappling with integrating AI tools into their teaching practices. Many teachers have expressed concern about students’ increasing reliance on generative AI tools such as ChatGPT to complete assignments.

Google encourages teachers to practice responsible AI and carefully review all AI-generated content and edit as necessary to ensure accuracy and appropriateness to specific classroom situations and local policies.

Gemini for Classroom was first released in 2024, and since then, Google has continuously added new features. Most recently, the company rolled out a major update last June that included features to help teachers brainstorm, create lesson plans, and customize materials for students.
