Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix will miss the remainder of the NFL playoffs after breaking his ankle in Saturday’s divisional round game against the Buffalo Bills.

The Broncos defeated the Bills 33-30 in overtime to advance to the AFC Championship Game. There, they will have to face either the New England Patriots or Houston Texans without their second-year play-caller.

Head coach Sean Payton told reporters after the game that backup QB Jarrett Stidham is expected to start next weekend after the Knicks suffered the injury on the penultimate play of overtime.

Will Lutz's 24-yard field goal earned Denver a dramatic 33-30 victory over Buffalo in overtime, sending them to the AFC Championship Game.

Will Lutz’s 24-yard field goal earned Denver a dramatic 33-30 victory over Buffalo in overtime, sending them to the AFC Championship Game.

“Steedy is ready,” Payton said. “I said this at the beginning of the season: I feel like I have two (backup quarterbacks) that can start on a lot of teams. I know he feels the same way.”

“So be careful. Just watch.”

The Knicks completed 26 of 46 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns to one interception, losing Josh Allen and making it another disappointing end to the playoffs for the Buffalo Bills.

Payton explained that Nix was injured when he was tackled by Cole Bishop and hit the quarterback keeper for a loss of 2 yards.

The Knicks followed up the play with a deep shot to Marvin Mims Jr. that earned a 30-yard pass interference penalty on Tre’Davious White and set up Will Lutz’s game-winning field goal.

“He’s a tough player,” Payton added. “I said, ‘Listen, you’re the second QB to lead a team to the championship game in his second year, and (Patrick) Mahomes was the first.’

“This team has lost key players all year, but we’ll rise to the next challenge and move on from there.”

Nix was the 12th overall pick out of Oregon State in the 2024 NFL Draft and led the Broncos to their first playoff berth in 10 years during his rookie season.

The relationship with Payton continued in 2025, when Denver clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC while ending Kansas City’s run of nine straight AFC West titles.

Stidham is a seventh-year veteran backup who hasn’t attempted a pass in the NFL since the 2023 season, when he started the final two games of the season in place of Russell Wilson in Denver.
