Manchester United’s next manager: Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel are candidates for Jamie Karger to manage Old Trafford | Soccer News

Jamie Carragher has outlined a list of four candidates to be Manchester United’s next manager, suggesting the next permanent manager at Old Trafford must be a candidate with the right “energy” and “motivation” to take the club forward.

United parted ways with Ruben Amorim earlier this month after a disastrous 14 months at the club, appointing Michael Carrick as head coach until the end of the season.

Despite Carrick’s first game in charge, a stunning 2-0 win over rivals Manchester City, Carragher insisted Old Trafford needed a “special” leader.

Here are the options and what Mr. Carragher said…

Current position: England national team manager

“He’s been in the Premier League before. He’s clearly a top manager. What I like about him is I still think he’s got that energy, that drive and that sharpness,” Carragher said.

“He’s come into the England squad and he’s competing with the greatest players there. I’m not saying that should happen in every job he’s in, but there’s something about him.

“He’ll go fight for your club, he’ll fight against other clubs, and you just feel like he’s got something about him.”

Luis Enrique

Current role: Paris Saint-Germain

Carragher said: “I will absolutely be with him all day. We now consider him the best manager in Europe. He didn’t have a good time at Celta Vigo or Roma, but Barcelona still appointed him.”

Howe admits he is open to changes to turn Newcastle's away form around

Carragher believes Howe can handle the pressure from Manchester United.

Current role: Newcastle United

Carragher said: “I’m a big Eddie Howe fan. The type of football Newcastle play when they’re at their best, they’re full of forward energy, but what I really like is they have to be able to deal with the pressure of Manchester United.”

“When you’re in Newcastle and you live in the city, that’s always the case, but he does it brilliantly. I think he’ll also help with Manchester United having problems with young players, many of whom haven’t reached their potential, but I think Eddie Howe is a great manager.”

Julian Nagelsmann

Current role: Germany

Carragher said: “I don’t know everything about him but I think he’s a coach with a great reputation who has a lot to prove in some ways.”

Why can’t Carrick take the job?

Carragher said: “I’m going to rule out Michael Carrick. Going back to the question, do you believe this player can win the league? I have to believe he can win it. I don’t think Man United will win the league with Carrick, I don’t think Chelsea will win it with Liam Rosenior. I don’t mean to be rude, but it has to be special. I could be proven wrong.”

Jamie Carragher described Manchester United’s off-the-ball work in their win over rivals Manchester City as “out of this world”.

Why other candidates are not suitable

Carragher also highlighted why other candidates such as Xabi Alonso, Diego Simeone and Oliver Glasner are not suitable for the role.

“Jurgen Klopp will not be the manager of Manchester United. That’s out. Xabi Alonso can’t do that. He can’t do that with Liverpool. That can’t happen.”

“For me, Carlo Ancelotti won’t have the energy or the desire to take Man United back. Zinedine Zidane is a younger version of[Carlo]Ancelotti, but maybe I’m wrong. Enzo Maresca is no, but he’s a really good manager.”

“Xavi won the league with Barcelona, but does he have enough experience at Manchester United? He only has a few years’ experience as a manager.

“Roberto Martínez, if he does a great job in Portugal, there is no doubt that Roberto will be ready. The only thing he hasn’t done in his career is run an elite football club.

“He’s going to have to do something really special. Mauricio Pochettino is the same as Ancelotti. Chelsea wanted a young, energetic manager, so they chose Enzo Maresca.”

Oliver Glasner, I would immediately say no because of the system. Andoni Iraola has done a great job and has been linked with the top job, but going from Bournemouth to Man United is a big jump.

“It’s the same with Marco Silva. Their next step will be Tottenham. It feels more like Tottenham for them. Roberto de Zerbi is a great manager, but he could go to war with the owners in six weeks.”

“Diego Simeone is an interesting person. I was talking to Gary Neville about United’s DNA. Interestingly, Roy[Keane]and Gary both mentioned Simeone on different occasions.”

“He’s a defensive coach so that’s out of the club’s DNA. You can’t ask a manager to make changes.”
