Justin Rose hit the first Albatross in TGL history, helping Los Angeles Golf Club to an 8-4 victory over Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club at SoFi Center.
Woods, part of a company that created a technology-enabled golf league, sat out as he continues to recover from an injury, but watched as the Jupiter Links suffered its second loss of the season.
Rose, who saw Los Angeles build a three-point lead with triples from fellow Collin Morikawa and Saheeth Segala, brought the fans to their feet by hitting his second shot on the par-5 10th hole on the opening singles hole.
Jupiter Lynx’s lineup of Akshay Bhatia, Max Homa and Kevin Kisner battled back to cut the gap to one with two holes remaining, but Los Angeles shut out the game, raising hopes for a berth in the season-ending SoFi Cup playoffs.
Los Angeles tricked his opponent on the par-5 second into accepting a hammer that would double his points offer on that hole, but then wisely rejected the same option when Bhatia dropped his tee shot near on the par-3 fifth.
After Segala won the next hole and Kisner found the penalty area off the tee to give Jupiter Links a 4-1 loss, Los Angeles won the final hole of the triple with a 3-on-3 alternating shot.
After Rose’s first albatross of his career extended Los Angeles’ lead, Segala found the penalty area and the Jupiter Lynx hauled it back on the 12, Homa scored the next goal under the hammer and Woods’ team picked up two more points.
Los Angeles used another hammer on the 14th after Morikawa went for birdie, with Bhatia missing a 10-foot try for two points, and Seagala extended his lead with a par on the final hole.
“You can hit a great shot, but the outcome is always slightly out of your control,” Rose said of the albatross. “I was totally set and I loved the feeling when I came out of the club. Then the moment came and I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s over! It was fun celebrating with the boys and it was a great moment for sure.’
