Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner says he is “100 per cent committed” to the club until the end of the season after “very good discussions” with chairman Steve Parish.
Glasner confirmed last week that he would leave Selhurst Park when his contract expires in the summer, but launched a scathing attack on the club’s hierarchy after last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Sunderland.
But six days after his bombshell interview, Glasner gave an open and honest 30-minute press conference, broadcast live on Sky Sports, ahead of Sunday’s Premier League home game against Chelsea, in which he revealed:
He did not regret his explosive comments He had a “very long dinner” with Steve Parish and that “everything was cleared up” between them, likening his situation to “the sun shining after a thunderstorm” Due to his emotional nature, he did not rule out the possibility of another outburst in the future Wattaway Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has submitted a transfer request The sale of Marc Guehy, who is expected to play on Sunday, was agreed in February 2025, and his departure at the end of the season was made public in December, as originally planned. Daniel Muñoz has returned to training and Ismaila Sarr is available after returning from AFCON duty. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson will captain Palace for the remainder of the season after Guehi’s departure.
In his opening response, which lasted just over three minutes, Glasner said: “I thought a lot about what happened before and after the game, but I was pretty emotional afterwards. I think that shows how much the players and Crystal Palace mean to me. Some people might say, ‘Why do I care? I already told the club I was leaving in the summer,’ but that just goes to show how attached I am to the club.”
“And in these circumstances, in all circumstances, and we did not sell (Marc Gehi). I agreed a year ago in February, we had a meeting and we agreed to sell Marc.”
“It’s all about timing and substitutions. That was the whole situation. I know Crystal Palace will always let players go if they get a big offer from another club, but it was just the situation when the captain told the team 28 hours before a Premier League game that he was leaving. This was how I felt at that moment and this is what I tried to express.”
“I know it feels like a criticism, but for me it was just expressing my feelings, my team’s feelings.
“I had a very long dinner with Steve (Parish) this week and talked about this situation. It’s not about selling Mark, it’s about the timing and the possibility of a replacement. This is the situation I wanted to explain and it was a very good story for both of us.”
“However, nothing has changed from what I said in the press conference before the Sunderland game that I would do everything I could to play a great season. And Steve and I are still 100 per cent determined and will do our best to have the remainder of a great season and four great months together. This is what we all want and I know the club is working very hard to do the right thing at the moment.”
“It’s not that easy to find the right centre-back in January… but in this particular moment I felt I could have done better for the team’s success, for Crystal Palace’s success.
“This is true for everyone in a relationship, and I feel the same way. It was a thunderstorm, but the sun always shines after a thunderstorm, and when I started training again on Wednesday, the sun started shining.
“I’ve always been honest with the players: we had a really good week in training, we had great spirits and of course we were feeling high.
“Dani Muñoz came back at the beginning of the week and Isma Sarr also came back from Senegal as an AFCON winner. And now we’re preparing for the rest of the season. It starts this week and the club is preparing, so we’ll be fine.”
She added: “Everything has been resolved between Steve and I.
“He’s a great guy. Oliver Glassner is a good guy, Steve Parrish is a good guy, and if these two good guys talk to each other in the right way, this won’t be a problem.
“Again, I’m not attacking him personally. I just think he could have done a little better.”
“I have no regrets about my comment.”
When asked if he regretted his outburst, he said: “No, I don’t. Do you think that was the best way to go about it? No, I don’t think so, but that’s Oliver Glassner.
“I think that’s probably also part of what we accomplished together. That feeling, this helps create spirit, solidarity, belief. But sometimes it may not be the best way, but that’s who I am. I’m not saying I’m perfect, I wish I were, but on the other hand, I’ve never attacked anyone personally, I was just explaining my feelings about this situation.
“I felt in this game that if we all worked together we could have done better. And maybe, although I can’t prove it, we might not have lost. And that was how I felt after the game. And I always expect myself, the players and the club to give 100 per cent to Palace’s success.”
“And in this moment I realized again that we could have done better, and this is what I wanted to express.
“I don’t have any regrets, because I know who I am and who I am. But on the other hand, I also know that maybe it wasn’t the perfect, right moment. They asked me if I thought it would happen again, and I said yes, because that’s who I am.”
Asked if last week’s announcement of his departure had surprised Parish and the Royals, Oostlein said: “No, definitely not. We were planning on telling them by the end of December because we didn’t want someone to say, ‘Okay, Oliver’s not happy with the transfer market, so he’s leaving.'”
“We wanted to announce it before the window opened because we had nothing to do with it.
“But there are some reasons for all these games and then I decided to wait until after the three-game week and then I said,
Mateta has not submitted a transfer request
Sky Sports News reported this week that Jean-Philippe Mateta has informed Palace that he wants to leave the club in January, amid growing interest from Aston Villa and Juventus.
However, Glasner said the 28-year-old has not formally asked to leave.
“He did not submit a transfer request and we have not received any bids so far,” the 51-year-old revealed.
“For every player, there is a price at which the club says okay and a price at which the club agrees to sign him, after evaluating the whole situation: age, length of contract, etc. But again, no bids have come in and he has not submitted a transfer request, so he will play on Sunday.”
Asked if he had ever talked about leaving Palace, Glasner said: “I talk to a lot of players about a lot of different topics, but it’s natural that I don’t talk about it publicly.”
Regarding the Eagles’ transfer plans, he added: “The club is working hard. They are doing the right thing and I am confident we will do the right thing.”
Chelsea defender Achiampong becomes Palace target
Exclusive coverage from James Green and James Savandra on Sky Sports News:
Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong has emerged as a potential target for Crystal Palace this window.
Palace are considering a number of options, both short and long-term, to fill the void left by former captain Guehi, who joined Manchester City in a £20m deal this month.
Teenager Achiampong is one of the names Palace are currently considering.
It is believed that formal conversations have not yet taken place between Palace and Chelsea regarding the 19-year-old.
The two clubs have traded a number of players in recent years and have developed a close working relationship.
Chelsea allowed Trevor Chalobah and Ben Chilwell to join the Eagles on loan last season, with the likes of Guehi and Conor Gallagher following that well-trodden path before them.
It is currently unclear whether Chelsea will allow a permanent sale or allow the youngster to move on loan during this period. The Blues are considering signing a centre-back themselves due to injuries to multiple defenders.
Achiampong has started both of the domestic cup games and played in the last four Premier League games under new head coach Liam Rosenior.
