finding

Governor Vadim Filashkin said on the messaging app Telegram that four people were killed and five others were injured in the Russian attack on Cherkasy, in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, which is still under Ukrainian control. Filashkin said Russian forces had shelled settlements in the Donetsk region 10 times in the past day, evacuating 109 people, including 17 children. Russian troops attacked the village of Komishvakha in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya region with glide bombs and other weapons, killing one person, regional governor Ivan Fedorov announced. Over the past day, Russian forces fired drones into the city of Kherson and several villages in the Kherson region, killing one person and wounding two, according to regional military authorities. Russian troops have killed a 72-year-old man and wounded two others, including a child, in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, the head of the regional military administration, Oleksandr Hanza, announced. The Ukrainian Air Force announced that it shot down 76 of the 101 Russian drones launched into Ukraine in the past day. Several people were injured in attacks by Ukrainian forces across Russia’s front-line areas and Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine, including five people injured on a bus in Russia’s Belgorod region, Russia’s state-run TASS news agency said. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine claimed that Ukrainian troops attacked a fuel station and radar installation at the Penzafte Product Fuel Base in Russia’s Penza region, causing a fire. Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that its forces had captured the village of Siminivka, about 47 kilometers (29 miles) northeast of Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv.

Ukraine-Russia-US talks

The first day of trilateral talks involving negotiators from the United States, Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi concluded late Friday night, Ukraine’s president’s office announced in a post on X, adding that talks would continue on Saturday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a statement after Friday’s meeting, saying it was “too early to draw any conclusions” about the content of the negotiations. “By now, our team should have at least gotten some answers from Russia,” Zelenskiy said. “Tomorrow we will see how the conversation develops and what results it produces,” he added. Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s chief negotiator, told X that the talks “focused on the conditions for ending the war in Russia and the further logic of the negotiation process aimed at progress towards a dignified and lasting peace.” The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday that the talks are scheduled to last two days “as part of ongoing efforts to foster dialogue and identify a political solution to the crisis.” Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that talks between U.S. and Russian officials on the eve of the Abu Dhabi meeting were “substantive, constructive and very frank.” Ushakov said Russian Admiral Igor Kostyukov will lead a Russian military team in Abu Dhabi, and investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev will hold separate talks with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkov on economic issues.

energy crisis

Maxim Timchenko, head of Ukraine’s largest private power generation company DTEK, told Reuters that Ukraine’s energy situation is approaching a “humanitarian catastrophe” following repeated Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Ukraine’s state-run electricity company Ukrenergo has announced emergency power outages in most parts of the country following recent Russian airstrikes.

regional security

The Swedish Air Force announced on Friday that on Thursday it “intercepted two Su-35S escorting a Tu-22M (Russian military aircraft) over the Baltic Sea.” According to Reuters, the French Navy has transferred the Grinch oil tanker to the port of Marseille-Fos for inspection as it suspects it is part of a “shadow fleet” of vessels used by Russia to export sanctioned oil.
