Scotland will be given a last-minute spot in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, replacing Bangladesh in the tournament to be held in India and Sri Lanka next month, Sky Sports News understands.
Bangladesh has repeatedly requested the ICC to hold the team match in Sri Lanka due to security concerns, given ongoing political tensions with India.
Despite the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) indicating that the Bangladesh government had not given them permission to travel to India, the ICC rejected the request, saying there was no security threat and it was “unfeasible”.
Sky Sports News understands that Scotland have been confirmed as Bangladesh’s replacements for the tournament, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports from February 7, although the ICC warned after an emergency meeting on Wednesday that they would be excluded if they did not agree to play for India.
As the top-ranked T20I nation that did not initially qualify, Scotland will be given a late-start slot, filling Bangladesh’s slot in Group C alongside England, Italy, Nepal and the West Indies.
Sky Sports News has contacted the ICC for comment.
