Aston Villa have reached a verbal agreement to re-sign midfielder Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus.
Once the paperwork is completed, the 27-year-old will join Villa on loan with an option to buy in the summer, just 18 months after leaving to join the Serie A club.
Even with the permanent aspect of the deal, it would only cost Villa a fraction of the £43m (€50m) he sold to Juventus in June 2024.
Despite interest from Chelsea, Luiz is determined to return to Villa and feels he has spent the happiest years of his career there.
Sky Sports News report that he feels his heart is still at Villa and this was the move he really wanted.
Villa’s desire to strengthen their midfield is partly due to recent injuries to Boubacar Kamara and John McGinn, who are both out for the season, and Youri Tielemans, who injured his ankle in last weekend’s game against Newcastle.
Villa have targeted a new midfielder on loan after agreeing an £18m deal with Besiktas striker Tammy Abraham.
Lewis has been on loan at Nottingham Forest this season, but has started just five Premier League games, playing a total of 318 minutes.
Luiz made over 200 appearances for Villa between 2019 and 2024 and is under contract with Juventus until 2029.
His loan to Forest included a buyout obligation conditional on the number of appearances he made.
Villa currently sit third in the Premier League, level with Manchester City on 46 points, and are well placed to qualify for the FA Cup as well as the Europa League.
