Google now lets users jump from AI overview to AI mode conversations

Google is rolling out the ability for users to ask follow-up questions directly from AI Overview, the AI-generated overview at the top of Google search results. Users will be able to move back and forth in the conversation using AI Mode, Google’s conversational search feature for complex questions.

The tech giant also announced the adoption of Gemini 3 as the new default model for AI Overovers worldwide. The company said in a blog post that the update will give users “best-in-class AI responses on search results pages.”

Tuesday’s announcement marks Google’s continued efforts to make search a more interactive, AI-driven experience, rather than a static search results experience.

“People come to Search for an incredibly wide range of questions, and sometimes they come to Search to find information quickly, such as sports scores or the weather, where simple results are enough,” said Robbie Stein, vice president of Google Search products, in a blog post. “But for complex questions or tasks that require deep exploration of a topic, you should be able to seamlessly leverage powerful conversational AI experiences.”

Google says testing shows that users prefer an experience that flows naturally into a conversation, and that asking follow-up questions while maintaining context from the AI overview makes searches more useful.

The new experience is designed to feel like a single flow, with links that allow users to move from quick snapshots to deeper conversations as needed, the tech giant said.

The update comes days after Google announced it was introducing “personal intelligence” to AI mode, allowing Gmail and Google Photos to provide more personalized responses. The company debuted Personal Intelligence in its Gemini app earlier this month, connecting to the entire Google ecosystem, including Gmail, Photos, Search, YouTube history, and more, allowing the AI assistant to tailor its responses.

Google also recently introduced AI Overview to Gmail, allowing users to use natural language to search their inbox and get faster answers instead of relying on traditional keyword searches or opening multiple emails to find specific information. The company made this announcement to coincide with the debut of its new AI Inbox.
