Waymo is starting to shuttle passengers in San Francisco to the airport.

of alphabetThe company that owns it said in a blog post Thursday that it will open access to San Francisco International Airport to some customers and welcome all passengers in phases over the coming months.

Transfers will initially take place at airport car rental centers and will eventually be expanded to other locations such as terminals. Waymo began driving passengers on highways late last year, a necessary step toward entering airport transportation.

“Transportation to San Francisco International Airport provides one of the most requested features for our passengers and further deepens our relationship with San Francisco,” Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said in a blog post. “As millions of people travel for large-scale events this year, we look forward to meeting the growing demand for reliable, fully autonomous vehicles.”

SFO will be Waymo’s third major airport, pushing the company further into territory that has been dominated by Uber and Lyft in recent years. Waymo currently offers transportation at San Jose Mineta International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
