Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine this week, providing relief from the heat for tens of thousands of Ukrainians as they grapple with plummeting winter temperatures.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the Russian attack focused on energy facilities across at least six regions and involved 70 missiles and 450 attack drones. This is the biggest attack so far this year, according to a CNN tally.

The attack comes as Ukrainians face the coldest temperatures this winter. Early Tuesday morning local time, the temperature in Kiev was -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). Residents were seen evacuating in Kiev’s metro, wearing heavy coats and hats, huddled under sleeping bags and blankets.

“This is not a side effect of war. This is a Russian strategy. Winter temperatures are being used as a weapon. Heat and electricity are being targeted,” the EU ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova wrote in a statement, accompanied by a photo of herself sheltering in a toilet overnight. “Every night, I think of the millions of people across the country who are shivering at home.”

Here are some articles that went viral last week and photos that caught our eye.
