Ben Stokes was hit by a cricket ball and suffered a serious facial injury.

The England Test captain posted a photo on Instagram showing his right eye badly swollen and bruised, his cheek and lip bruised and his nose stuffed with bandages.

He captioned the photo: “Look at the condition of the cricket ball.”

The 34-year-old has returned to England after a disastrous Ashes tour that ended in a 4-1 defeat last month, but question marks remain over his status amid an ECB review.

Stokes revealed the extent of his injury on social media.

England manager Brendan McCullum insisted parts of the accident were “unusual” and the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Stokes could next feature for Durham in the early rounds of the County Championship before England begin their Test summer against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 4.
