Ski jumping has come under intense scrutiny at the start of the Milan Winter Olympics over fears of lewd acts involving penises.
In a blow to the Olympic spirit, it has been suggested that elite ski jumpers are growing their penises to gain sporting benefits.
These claims will be investigated by the World Anti-Doping Agency following suggestions that athletes are increasing the size of their groin areas to gain a competitive edge.
The issue of athletes potentially injecting substances such as hyaluronic acid directly into their penises to increase size and gain the benefits of wearing larger ski suits to help with aerodynamics was first raised in the German newspaper Bild.
“We don’t know the details of ski jumping or how it improves performance,” WADA Director-General Olivier Nigri said at a press conference in Milan about the mystery known as “penisgate.”
“If something surfaces, we will investigate it and see if it is related to doping. We will not touch on other (non-doping) means of improving performance.”
Ski jumping athletes vehemently deny that such conduct exists, and no athlete has ever been accused or convicted of such conduct.
But ski jumping teams have long sought to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals by making minor changes to their jumpsuits.
Last month, several members of the Norwegian team were suspended after they were caught on video adding illegal seams to the crotch of their suits during last year’s world championships.
