The recent release by the US Department of Justice of millions of documents related to notorious sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein has shed further light on the relationships he had with a variety of influential figures, including many in the US technology industry.
Notably, these files refer to communications and meetings involving technology mogul Elon Musk and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, two of the world’s richest people. The pair have come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks, but both have denied any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.
But the two billionaires aren’t the only tech names to recur in the new trove of documents. Other technology executives named include Google co-founder Sergey Brin, venture capitalist Peter Thiel, former Microsoft executive Stephen Sinofsky and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.
These executives have been linked to Epstein in the past, but the new revelations reveal more than previously known about their relationships with the convicted sex offender through emails, schedules, photos and other records.
Mr. Brin and Mr. Sinofsky did not comment on the matter, but Mr. Tyle and Mr. Hoffman said they only engaged with Mr. Epstein for legal and lawful purposes.
Authorities stress that the presence of a name in the records does not indicate evidence of wrongdoing and does not prove that the name was included in the customer list or in the alleged blackmail scheme.
Still, the files help paint a picture of Mr. Epstein’s years of efforts to embed himself in some of Silicon Valley’s most powerful circles, and at times become their confidant and power broker, before his death in 2019.
Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Palantir
Peter Thiel, a venture capitalist and co-founder of Palantir and PayPal who once worked with Elon Musk, also appears in Epstein’s files, and the latest release shows communications between and about both.
The exchanges began around 2014, months before Epstein was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges, and continued until around 2019, long after he was first formally charged with sex-related crimes in 2006.
The documents include a recording of an undated conversation between Epstein and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in which Epstein mentions Thiel.
In the recording, Mr. Epstein advised Mr. Barak on how to use his connections to land a high-paying position at a company, and suggested Mr. Palantir as a possible candidate. He added that he hasn’t met Thiel yet, but expects to meet him next week.
The two actually became close friends over the years, exchanging emails that included meeting plans, discussions about the Trump campaign, and other informal correspondence. Prior to one scheduled meeting, Thiel’s team even sent details of his diet to Epstein’s staff.

Files released by the House Oversight Committee in November 2025 also show that Epstein invited Thiel to visit the “Caribbean.”
In response to CNBC’s request for comment, a representative for Mr. Thiel said the venture capitalist has never visited Mr. Epstein’s infamous private island in the Virgin Islands.
The New York Times reported in June that Epstein invested $40 million in 2015 and 2016 in two funds run by a venture capital firm co-founded by Thiel.
In a podcast appearance aired on August 16, 2024, Thiel talked about meeting Epstein, stating that they met several times starting in 2014 after being introduced by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.
Thiel said the discussion centered around taxes and financial advice. He added that he underestimated the severity of Epstein’s previous crimes because of his lenient sentence in 2008 and because he trusted his judgment about their connections.
Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn Co-Founder
The latest release of the Epstein files includes numerous references to Reid Hoffman, who co-founded LinkedIn in 2002, and includes several friendly email exchanges between the two.
Many of the communications focused on fundraising for MIT’s Media Lab, but also included references to personal interactions, tax advice, meeting plans, and gifts Hoffman sent to Epstein. The document also confirms that Mr. Hoffman visited Mr. Epstein’s private island in 2014.
Hoffman has previously acknowledged visiting the island, saying the trip was strictly for charity and later regretting not researching Epstein more thoroughly beforehand.
But other emails show plans for additional visits to Mr. Epstein’s residences, including his Zorro ranch in New Mexico and his apartment in Manhattan, although it is unclear which visits actually took place. Mr. Hoffman recently acknowledged that he met with Mr. Epstein in 2016 in Palo Alto and Cambridge.
Epstein is seen calling Hoffman a “very close friend” and saying at one point that he wanted to meet and talk to the Internet entrepreneur. Emails from 2014 show investors were trying to help connect Mr. Hoffman with investment opportunities in India.

Meanwhile, a 2015 email from Epstein mentioned a dinner Hoffman hosted in Palo Alto that was attended by Zuckerberg, Musk, Thiel, and MIT neuroscientist Ed Boyden.
Mr. Hoffman connected Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Epstein via email after the event. In response to the investigation, Mehta directed CNBC to a spokesperson’s 2019 statement that said Zuckerberg did not contact Epstein again after the dinner.
Hoffman did not respond to CNBC’s request for comment. He previously said he regretted his interactions with Epstein and called for the full release of the Epstein files. The latest documents reviewed by CNBC contained no indication of criminal activity or involvement of Mr. Epstein in any illegal activity.
But last November, President Donald Trump ordered a Justice Department investigation into Hoffman, a major Democratic donor, along with former President Bill Clinton and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.
Mr. Trump characterized the probe as an investigation into the Democratic Party’s ties to Mr. Epstein, but some critics argued it was a departure from Mr. Trump’s own references in the file. Trump has admitted to having been friends with Epstein in the past, but said he knew nothing about Epstein’s crimes and ended their relationship several years ago.
Sergey Brin, Google co-founder
The file release also includes multiple references to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, including email correspondence.
One particular email chain from April 2003 showed Brin communicating with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime friend and convicted co-conspirator, about possible plans for a dinner at Epstein’s New York mansion.
This interaction appeared to be a follow-up to an earlier encounter between the two. “Dinner at Jeffries is always a fun, casual and relaxed atmosphere. I look forward to seeing you there,” Maxwell wrote.
Brin did not respond to CNBC’s request for comment through Google.
Mr. Epstein’s relationship with Mr. Brin has been previously documented, but no allegations of wrongdoing have come to light.

Epstein allegedly introduced Brin as a client to JPMorgan Chase in 2004 and then connected him to bank executives for tax advice, according to a complaint filed by the Virgin Islands government in U.S. District Court against JPMorgan Chase Bank. The U.S. Virgin Islands also issued a subpoena to Brin in March 2023, demanding documents related to Epstein’s interactions with JPMorgan.
Meanwhile, court documents unsealed in 2024 related to Maxwell’s case included evidence in which Epstein’s accuser Sarah Ransom claimed she met Brin and his then-fiancée, now ex-wife, Anne Wojcicki, on Epstein’s Island.
Brin resigned as president of Google’s parent company Alphabet on December 3, 2019, saying at the time that he no longer needed the role. However, he remained the controlling shareholder and board member.
He returned from semi-retirement in late 2023 and actively contributed to the company’s artificial intelligence efforts, including efforts at Gemini.
Stephen Sinofsky, former Microsoft executive
The latest files reveal details of Epstein’s relationship with Stephen Sinofsky, a former Microsoft executive who oversaw major products such as Windows and Office.
After Sinofsky left Microsoft in 2012, he sought advice from Epstein about the terms of his departure, the documents show.
Mr. Sinofsky, now a director partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, wrote in an email to Mr. Epstein in September 2013, about three months after Microsoft announced the terms of his $14 million severance agreement, “I got paid and so do you:).”
Mr. Sinofsky continued to email Mr. Epstein throughout 2018, discussing his finances, career prospects, and social events in New York, San Francisco, and Seattle.

Email exchanges from November 2012 also show that Mr. Epstein mentioned the possibility of Mr. Sinofsky and Apple’s Tim Cook meeting regarding job opportunities. In the email, Mr. Epstein seemed to suggest he had recently spoken to Mr. Cook, saying, “Tim Cook was excited to meet with Mr. Sinofsky,” but the context is unclear. A few months later, Mr. Sinofsky emailed Mr. Epstein about his meeting with Mr. Cook.
Sinofsky declined to comment. Apple did not respond to a request for comment on the alleged interactions between Mr. Epstein and Mr. Cook.
Epstein’s relationship with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, which appears in previous document disclosures, has also come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks after being mentioned in the latest disclosures. They included drafts of emails to himself suggesting that Epstein had helped facilitate extramarital affairs and sexual encounters with Gates.
In an interview with Australia’s 9News on Wednesday, Gates denied any wrongdoing in connection with the new files, calling Epstein’s claims “totally absurd and completely false.”
He stressed that his interactions with Epstein were limited to dinners to discuss potential philanthropy, adding that he had “never been to the island” and “never met the woman.”
