meta On Wednesday, it debuted an AI feature called “Dear Algo” that allows Threads users to personalize their content recommendation algorithms.

Users of threads can tell the Dear Algo tool what kinds of posts they want to see, similar to how people interact with chat bots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT using written prompts.

This feature is the latest example of how Meta continues to incorporate artificial intelligence into its various apps, including Threads. The social media company also released AI capabilities for its Facebook services on Tuesday. This will allow users to animate their profile pictures and change other images using the Meta AI digital assistant.

Meta told investors last month that it plans to spend $115 billion to $135 billion in AI-related capital spending this year. This is nearly double the capital investment Meta made when it overhauled its AI division last year.

Dear Algo is the latest addition to Threads, the microblogging platform launched by Meta in July 2023 to compete with Twitter, now called X, and part of Elon Musk’s xAI and SpaceX merger earlier this month.

Last month, Meta announced that Threads has 400 million monthly active users and will begin rolling out advertising worldwide. CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts in January that Meta plans to debut and test new AI products and capabilities in 2026 as it continues to invest heavily in data centers and related computing infrastructure.

To use the new tool, Threads users must create a public post on the platform that begins with the phrase “Dear Algo” and more or less describes the type of content they want to see.

A company spokesperson told CNBC that Meta was inspired by a trend of people publicly sharing posts containing the phrase “Dear Argo.”

“When you share a request, Dear Algo adjusts your feed for three days, so you always have access to the latest conversations. You can also repost someone else’s Dear Algo request and apply their content preferences to your own feed,” Mehta said in a blog post.

Meta said it will begin testing Dear Algo with users in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, and then roll it out to more countries.
