WordPress.com, Automattic’s website hosting platform, will now include the WordPress AI assistant, the company announced Tuesday. This feature is designed to work within a website and understand its content and layout, allowing site owners to make changes using natural language commands.
With new tools, you can issue commands to your AI assistant to adjust your site’s layout, style, and other patterns, and watch your changes reflected on your site as you work. These instructions don’t have to be precisely customized prompts, the company says. Instead, you can use more general language such as “make this section feel more modern or spacious,” “change the site’s colors to be brighter and bolder,” or “provide more font options for a clean, professional feel.”

You can also tell the AI to add or adjust the layout to do things like “add a contact page” or “add a testimonials section below this section.” However, the company notes that its tweaks work with block themes, not classic themes. If you are using the latter, the assistant will not appear in the editor.
WordPress AI Assistant can also update content on your site. For example, you can ask them to rewrite their introduction to sound more confident, or even translate a section into another language.
AI can also act like an editor, offering headline suggestions, fact checks, and other grammar and editing suggestions. This feature is available through the block notes editor introduced in WordPress 6.9, which allows you to collaborate with your teammates in the editor. Now, you can bring AI into that workflow by typing “@ai” followed by your request. AI will provide the answer here, including any relevant links or other information if you cite external sources.

Meanwhile, for visual support, the Assistant leverages Google Gemini’s Nano Banana AI model, which can be used to create new images or edit existing ones. The AI helper, available as a new (Generate Image) button in the Media Library, allows you to specify image requirements such as aspect ratio, and specify image styles.

The company states that WordPress AI Assistant is an opt-in feature that users can enable if they choose. To do this, you need to go to your site list after logging in, click on your site name, and click (Settings). In (Settings), scroll down to (AI Tools) and toggle the setting (Enable AI Assistant) on.

Customers who purchase a website that includes the AI website builder automatically enable the assistant.
