Iran has continued to attack American assets across the Gulf region, a day after a U.S.-Israeli attack confirmed the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
The United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran on Saturday as talks between Washington and Tehran continue over Iran’s nuclear program. Iran responded on the same day with missile and drone strikes across the region, targeting Israel as well as U.S. military facilities in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq.
As tensions continue to rise in the third day of the conflict, here’s what the situation was like on Monday:

Explosions were also heard in the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi and Qatar’s capital Doha on Monday morning. Qatar initially used the Patriot defense system to intercept incoming missiles and drones in its airspace, but the Defense Ministry said it is now deploying fighter jets to shoot down missiles and drones over Gulf waters. The Kuwaiti military said in a statement on Monday that the country’s air defense forces had “confronted and intercepted numerous hostile air targets” over the central region of the country in the early hours of today. Citing anonymous witnesses, Reuters reported that smoke rose near the US embassy in Kuwait. Kuwait state news agency said some debris fell on the Mina al-Ahmadi refinery near Kuwait City, causing “minor injuries to two workers.” Footage reviewed by Al Jazeera showed the jet plane crashing in the Kuwait city of Al Jafra, 32 kilometers (19 miles) west of Kuwait City, with thick plumes of smoke rising. On Sunday evening, Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior reported that Iran had targeted maritime facilities near the port of Mina Salman in the capital Manama. Bahrain’s interior ministry issued a statement on Monday regarding the X, saying falling debris from an intercepted missile caused a fire on a “foreign vessel” in the Salman industrial area. Bahrain’s interior ministry also announced that it had activated an air raid warning and urged residents to head to the nearest safe location. Qatar Airways, Qatar’s flag carrier, said its flights remain suspended due to the country’s continued airspace closures.

On Sunday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he had accepted a US request to allow British military bases to be used for “defensive” strikes against Iran aimed at deterring missile retaliatory strikes. The UK has two Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) in Cyprus, Akrotiri and Dhekelia. These are legally British-owned territories within Cyprus. Shortly after midnight on Monday, a Shahid drone struck a British air force base in Akrotiri, with Britain and Cyprus saying they reported “limited damage”.
