Company X announces it will suspend creators from its revenue sharing program for unlabeled AI posts related to “armed conflict”

X has announced that it will take action against creators who post AI videos about armed conflict without disclosing that the content is generated by AI. On Tuesday, X’s head of product Nikita Beer announced that anyone who uses AI technology to mislead others in this way will be banned from the company’s creator revenue sharing program for three months (90 days).

If you continue to post misleading AI content after your suspension is lifted, you will be permanently suspended from the program.

“During wartime, it’s important that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technology, it’s easy to create content that misleads people,” Bier wrote in X. “Going forward, users who post AI-generated videos of armed conflict without additional disclosure that they were created by AI will be suspended from creator revenue sharing for 90 days.”

X says it will combine tools used to detect generative AI content with Community Notes, a crowd-sourced fact-checking system, to identify misleading posts.

X’s Creator Revenue Sharing Program provides the ability for creators to earn money by posting on the platform and sharing ad revenue if their posts are popular. Critics of the program argue that while it is designed to increase the amount of engaging content found on X, it also encourages creators to post sensational content, such as clickbait and other posts intended to provoke outrage. Others have criticized lax content moderation and the requirement to pay creators X amount of subscribers to participate.

Given how easily AI can be used to create misleading photos and videos, X’s ban on rewarding creators financially based on the type of content is only a limited fix. Outside of war, AI media is often used to create political misinformation and push deceptive products in the influencer economy, all of which will continue to be allowed under the new policy.
