The House Ethics Committee on Wednesday announced an investigation into Rep. Tony Gonzalez, R-Texas, who has come under fire for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a staffer who committed suicide last year.

The committee announced it would investigate whether Gonzalez “committed sexual misconduct toward individuals employed in his congressional office” or “unfairly discriminated against by providing special accommodations or privileges.”

Gonzalez has denied having an affair with his former aide Regina Santos Aviles, who died in September 2025. Gonzalez has said he will remain prime minister, but several Republican lawmakers have called on him to resign.

The study’s announcement came the day after the Texas primary. Gonzalez, who is running for re-election, will face a runoff in May. He faces off against Brandon Herrera, who challenges Gonzalez from the right.
