President Donald Trump said Friday that there is no deal to end the U.S. war against Iran without “unconditional surrender” by Iran.
“Then, and after a great and acceptable leader is elected, we and our many wonderful and courageous allies and partners will work tirelessly to bring Iran back from the brink of destruction and make it economically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before,” President Trump said in a post on Truth Social announcing the ultimatum to surrender.
“Iran has a great future. We will make Iran great again (miga!),” President Trump wrote.
After President Trump announced his demands, futures prices for Brent crude oil, the world benchmark, rose, topping $90 a barrel.
Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Al Kaabi warned on Friday that rising oil prices due to the war with Iran “could depress the global economy.”
Alkaabi told the Financial Times that oil prices could reach $150 a barrel within weeks if tankers are unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s request comes as Iran has yet to choose a leader to replace Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who was killed last weekend in a U.S.-Israel airstrike at the start of the war.
Last June, as President Trump was considering launching a military strike against Iran, he made a similar demand for Iran’s “unconditional surrender” in another social media post.
