ChatGPT can now create interactive visuals to help understand math and science concepts

On Tuesday, OpenAI introduced Dynamic Visual Explanation, a new ChatGPT feature that lets users see how formulas, variables, and mathematical relationships change in real time.

Users can now interact directly with interactive visuals instead of just reading instructions or looking at static diagrams. For example, when examining the Pythagorean theorem, you can adjust the side lengths of a triangle and immediately see updates to the hypotenuse. Users can adjust numbers and variables and see the changes take effect immediately.

To try this feature, ask ChatGPT questions like “What is the lens equation?” Or, “How do I find the area of a circle?” ChatGPT not only responds with explanations, but also interactive modules that you can interact with.

These visuals are currently available for over 70 math and science topics, including binomial squares, Charles’ law, area of a circle, compound interest, Coulomb’s law, difference of squares, exponential decay, Hooke’s law, kinetic energy, linear equations, and Ohm’s law.

OpenAI plans to expand this functionality to include more interactive topics in the future. Available to all logged in ChatGPT users.

The launch of dynamic visual explanations is notable in that it somewhat changes the role of the tool. Rather than simply providing answers, it asks users to directly engage with fundamental concepts. Whether it leads to deeper understanding may depend on how it is used.

As AI continues to transform the way people approach learning, there is a heated debate in the education world. Although some educators are concerned about over-reliance on AI, many teachers and students have already adopted these tools and incorporated them into their daily learning routines. According to OpenAI, more than 140 million people use ChatGPT every week to help them learn math and science, traditionally difficult areas for learners.

Other major AI companies are considering similar interactive features. In November, Google’s Gemini launched its own interactive diagrams and visuals.

This new feature joins other recent ChatGPT educational tools, including a learning mode that takes users step-by-step through problems. There’s also QuizGPT, which allows users to create flashcards and have ChatGPT quiz them on any topic before the exam.
