OpenAI plans to combine a web browser, ChatGPT app, and Codex coding app into a single desktop super app, CNBC confirmed Thursday.

Fiji Simo, OpenAI’s applications CEO, will oversee the changes with support from OpenAI president Greg Brockman, a spokesperson said. The new app aims to help OpenAI streamline the user experience and reduce fragmentation.

“Companies go through phases of exploration and phases of refocus, both of which are important,” Simo said in a post on X on Thursday. “But as we’re seeing now with Codex, when a new bet starts to pay off, it’s very important to double down on it and avoid distractions. I’m really happy to seize this moment.”

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the super app.

The effort to integrate OpenAI’s products into one application began after Simo held an all-hands meeting with employees earlier this month to answer their questions about the company’s priorities. He said OpenAI is “aggressively oriented” toward productive use cases.

“What’s really important for us right now is to stay focused and execute very well,” Simo said during the meeting, according to a partial transcript seen by CNBC.

OpenAI exploded into the mainstream following the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022, and has since grown to become one of the fastest-growing commercial organizations on the planet. The company has released a flurry of new products and experiences in recent months, including the Codex app and browser, as it races to maintain its edge over rivals such as: google And humanity.

In May, the company hired Simo, the former CEO of Instacart, to lead its applications business. She has emphasized product focus and discipline within OpenAI as the company prepares for an IPO that could happen as early as this year.
