Former Manchester City and QPR midfielder Joey Barton has been refused bail following a court hearing.

The 43-year-old, from Widnes, Cheshire, has been in custody since March 10, when he appeared at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on a charge of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

On Friday, Judge David Potter refused Mr Burton’s bail application at Liverpool Crown Court.

Most bail hearings were held in private, after which judges announced decisions in open court.

Mr Barton did not attend the hearing, but is represented by Simon Szoka KC and is due to next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on April 7.

He and co-defendant Gary O’Grady, 50, of Huyton, Merseyside, are accused of attacking Kevin Lynch near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on March 8.

Mr O’Grady was released on conditional bail after a magistrate court hearing.

Barton has one England cap and also played for Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley and Marseille.

He currently hosts the podcast Common Sense With Joey Barton, which provides an “unfiltered” look at issues such as sports, society and politics.
