US President Donald Trump has threatened to “attack and destroy” Iranian power plants, saying: “Let’s start with the biggest ones!” The Strait of Hormuz must be opened within 48 hours. Introducing domestic facilities.

There are about 110 gas plants in Iran, of which a small number are hybrid plants, according to data from OpenInfraMap, an open-source intelligence tool for energy infrastructure research compiled by volunteers.

According to the site, the country also operates solar, hydro, wind, oil, diesel, coal, geothermal and nuclear power plants.

The three largest plants by production run on gas.

Damavand Combined Cycle Power Plant: Located approximately 70 km southeast of downtown Tehran. Output: 2,868MW. Shahid Salimi: Located in Mazandaran province near the Caspian Sea. Output: 2,215MW. Shahid Rajai: Located approximately 110km northeast of downtown Tehran. Output: 2,043MW.

Background: According to OpenInfraMap, Florida’s West County Energy Center is the largest operating natural gas power plant in the United States, with an output of 3,750 MW.

Iran produces most of its electricity from fossil fuels. More than 340,000 GWh was supplied by such fuels in 2023, while nearly 28,000 GWh was supplied by renewables, according to data on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) website.

According to the IAEA, Iran has only one nuclear reactor in operation, the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the west, and another is under construction. In 2023, Iran produced 5,740 GWh of electricity from nuclear energy.

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said a “hostile projectile” struck a compound in Bushehr on Tuesday, but there were no casualties and no damage to facilities was reported.

CNN’s Teele Rebane contributed to this report.
