Harry Maguire has confirmed that talks have taken place with Manchester United over a new contract, adding that it will be clear in the coming weeks whether he remains at Old Trafford or leaves.

Sky Sports News reported last week that United were in talks with Maguire over new terms, along with midfielder Koby Mainu.

The 33-year-old centre-back’s current contract at Old Trafford expires this summer, but it is understood that a one-year extension with an option for a further year is being discussed.

Maguire, who signed for United for £80m in 2019, has extended his stay, meaning he will spend at least nine years at the club.

Maguire, a constant presence in Michael Carrick’s rejuvenated United side, has been recalled to the England squad for the first time in 18 months. Asked about the current status of negotiations over his contract with the club, Maguire was positive that the right decision would be made and that it was not based on emotion.

“I think the conversations have taken place,” Maguire said. “I think we will reach an agreement that is best for the club and myself.

“We’ll find out what that deal is in the coming weeks. But yeah, whether I stay or go, I think it’s going to be resolved sooner or later. But it’s going to be resolved pretty quickly, and it should be.”

I love this club. But it has to be right for me and it has to be right for the club.

“I don’t want to stay on sentimental values. I want to stay because I want to be there and the club wants me to take the club further and they feel that I have a big role in that.”

“If that’s the case, I’m sure we can sit down and come up with something.”

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has said plenty of good things about Harry Maguire and expects even better things to come from the defender.

“Amorim has great ideas, but they didn’t work at Manchester United.”

Maguire also opened up about former United manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese head coach was sacked in January after just 14 months in charge at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports News reported that Amorim’s “emotional and inconsistent behavior” was a key factor in the decision, and that his refusal to adapt and evolve his preferred 3-4-3 system led to a breakdown in the head coach’s confidence.

Maguire has played more games since Carrick returned to the club on an interim basis, but has also put in some notable performances under Amorim.

Asked about his former boss, Maguire admitted he had issues with Amorim’s style, but had no doubt he would go on to achieve something as a manager elsewhere.

Sky Sports’ Gary Cotterill takes a closer look at Ruben Amorim’s ups and downs during his time as Manchester United manager.

“I can’t say too many bad things about Ruben,” Maguire said ahead of Friday’s friendly against Uruguay. “I really like Ruben, I think he has great ideas, ideas that didn’t work at Manchester United.

“I believe he will continue to have a great career and probably go on to win a lot of football matches at his next club.

“It didn’t work, it didn’t work and I think we as players have to take a lot of responsibility for that as well.

“But I think he’s led the club in a certain direction and I think he deserves a lot of credit for that, where he’s built a good, solid team.”
