Japanese brand Infiniti on Thursday unveiled a new midsize luxury SUV called the QX65 as it aims to make a comeback in the United States.

The vehicle is equipped with a 268-horsepower VC Turbo engine that delivers 286 foot-pounds of torque and dual 12.3-inch displays.

Eric LeDew, vice president of Infiniti Americas, said in a press release that the QX65 “accelerates Infiniti into the next era.”

Nissan’s premium brand Infiniti sold a record 153,000 vehicles in 2017 in the United States, one of the world’s most important auto markets. The company says it only sold a third of that last year.

Sales have fallen nearly every year since a record high in 2017, according to a report from Haig Partners, which brokers dealer deals. Infiniti’s sales in 2025 were down 9% from the previous year.

“Currently down 65.6% from its peak and with only two nameplates on dealer lots, Infiniti is in a tough position,” the report said.

In contrast, sales at Lexus, Nissan’s Japanese rival Toyota’s luxury brand, rose 7.1% in 2025 after already having a record year in 2024, according to Haig Partners. Even Acura rose slightly over the same period, at just under 1%.

Infiniti has been in “product stagnation” for some time, said Stephanie Brinley, principal auto analyst at S&P Global Mobility.

“Of course, it’s changed several times over the years,” she says. “And Nissan, our parent company, has a lot going on. Although we intend to support Infiniti, we are a little unsure.”

Infiniti currently has two 2026 models on sale in the United States. The third QX65 to be produced will be a midsize SUV — one of the largest single segments in the U.S. According to Cox Automotive, the starting price will be $53,990, which is lower than the average MSRP of about $77,000 for a luxury midsize car.

The brand chose New York City’s Grand Central Terminal to unveil the QX65 and, as in previous years, tapped NFL stars Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman to emcee the event, highlighting its American ambitions with the vehicle’s launch.

Brinley also said the QX65 is inspired by Infiniti’s older FX series sport-utility vehicles that debuted in the U.S. in the early 2000s.

“(Those vehicles) were great,” she said. “They were very stylish and performance-oriented, but also really cool and really vibrant.”

Infiniti said it plans to release one car each year for the next five years, rather than at a more aggressive pace.

“Hopefully they can turn this around,” Brinley said. But it will take some time. ”

The QX65 will be built in Smyrna, Tennessee, with vehicles expected to arrive at retailers in early summer.
