Mexican authorities say missing rescue ship bound for Cuba has been found

Two Mexican aid ships that disappeared at sea while delivering aid to Cuba have been located northwest of Cuba’s capital Havana after a search and rescue operation, the Mexican Navy said on Saturday.

The sailing ship was located 80 nautical miles from Havana using Mexican naval aircraft, and communication with the vessel was maintained via radio, according to the latest information from the Mexican Naval Secretariat (SEMAR).

A spokesperson for Our America Convoy confirmed to CNN on Saturday morning that the yacht’s crew were safe.

“The crew is safe and the boat continues its journey to Havana. The convoy continues to sail to fulfill its mission of delivering urgent humanitarian aid to the Cuban people,” the spokesperson said.

CNN has reached out to the Nuestra America fleet to confirm whether the ship is currently in Havana.

The sailboat lost contact with Mexican authorities and was reported missing on Thursday. A search and rescue operation was launched.

The ships set sail from Isla Mujeres in the Mexican Caribbean a week ago, on Saturday, March 21, and were expected to arrive “between Friday evening, March 27, and noon on Saturday, March 28,” Nuestra América Flotilla said.

Our America Convoy is a solidarity initiative of American groups and peoples.
Countries primarily from Latin America and Europe that aim to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba.

The initiative was inspired by the Sumd Global Fleet, which brought humanitarian aid to Gaza in 2025.

“We are an international coalition of people and organizations dedicated to:
“Delivering vital humanitarian aid to the Cuban people,” the convoy said.

The crucial aid to Cuba comes as the country has suffered a severe economic blow since the United States effectively cut off its oil supplies earlier this year, depriving its aging power grid of its main fuel source.

Last Sunday, the island experienced its second national power outage in less than a week, with the power grid “totally severed” and more than 10 million people without power.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said at the time that the first group of “Our America Convoy” arrived in Cuba on March 18 with “a huge amount of aid.”

Shortly thereafter, on Tuesday, March 24, the flagship of the convoy Nuestra América arrived in Havana after a four-day voyage. The boat arrived with humanitarian supplies: 14 tons of food and medicine, 73 solar panels and 12 bicycles.
