AP —

Three people, including a 10-month-old baby girl, were killed when strong winds toppled a tree during an Easter egg hunt in northern Germany on Sunday, police said.

Police said about 50 people from a nearby residential facility for new mothers, pregnant women and children were attending the event at around 11am in a forest near the town of Suttleholm when a 30-metre (100-foot) tree fell on top of the group.

Four people were trapped under a tree. A 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl were treated by paramedics but died at the scene, and the woman’s 10-month-old daughter later died in hospital. An 18-year-old woman suffered serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to hospital.

According to the facility’s website, it is part of the state-funded child welfare system and assists pregnant women and newborns in need. Grief counselors were sent to the scene.

Photos from the scene released by news site Bild showed several Easter eggs scattered on the ground and two victims covered in white sheets.

The German Meteorological Office had issued a strong wind warning for the area.
