Ellie Scotney won a grueling 10-round battle with Mayeli Flores to become the undisputed super bantamweight world champion.
He won by unanimous decision, unifying Flores’ WBA 122-pound belt with the WBO, WBC, and IBF world titles he already held. This earned her a place in British boxing history.
Scotney is Britain’s youngest undisputed world champion, male or female, in an era when she held four belts.
But Flores had his eyes set on making history for himself. She was fighting to become the first Mexican woman to win the undisputed championship, and she never let up for a second.
Two of the judges gave Scotney too lenient scores, twice in his favor 100-90 and the third 96-94 in favor of Scotney. However, it was a relentless and intense battle that gave Scotney no time to catch his breath.
Scotney, a devout Christian, went to church on Easter Sunday morning and in the evening was fighting to make his mark on Britain’s boxing legends.
There was no peace in the ring, only a precious little silence.
Flores is a small, wide fighter who went all-out from the first bell. In a frantic opening to the round, the Mexican forced his way forward on the front foot. The Catford fighter struggled to find space and Flores rocked her with a right early on.
Scotney had to find a way to control the chaos. She scored with a lead uppercut. But Flores kept going, landing more head shots. But before the second round was over, Scotney landed a stunning left hook and a hard right to the jaw.
Flores lowered his head and body, but Scotney waited and crossed with a left hook.
Scotney created space with a right hook and tested Flores’ chin with a right.
Flores let out a roar during the battle and continued his onslaught. In the flash, Scotney was able to show her technical skills and make incredible shots.
However, the battle turned into a breathtaking battle of hearts and wills. When one fires back at the other, the other fires back its own bullet.
Flores marched on to defeat Scotney. Her performance continued in a crowded ninth round at Scotney. But the Londoner smashed a right uppercut and a backhand hook.
That careful work proved the difference. She landed a right hook and repeated shots in the final round. Flores put every ounce of energy he had left, but Scotney found another big hook and drove it in.
She was overjoyed and naturally celebrated. This is to imagine an even better fight in 2026.
Scotney told Sky Sports: “I had to go through so many challenges just to get into this ring today and only God got me through.”
“Words can’t describe how hard it was. The scorecard didn’t do justice to (Flores).
“She was a real champion. That was the hardest test for me, but I knew it was going to be. She gave it her all tonight.”
