Iran threatens ‘Stargate’ AI data center

Iran has warned of further attacks on data centers across the Middle East in response to continued threats and airstrikes from the United States.

Iranian military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari said in a video released over the weekend and widely shared on Sunday that Iran would retaliate with attacks of its own against American energy and technology infrastructure in the region if the United States follows through on its threat to attack civilian infrastructure.

A video released by Iran shows an image of a globe, zooms in on Stargate’s data center in the United Arab Emirates, and displays the message, “Nothing hidden by Google is hidden from our eyes.”

Stargate is a $500 billion joint venture between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle to build AI data centers announced in January 2025. The initiative initially struggled to get off the ground due to funding issues and alleged costs related to customs duties, as it sought to expand internationally with new data centers.

The latest threat came after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to attack Iranian civilian infrastructure, including power plants and desalination facilities, by the end of Tuesday unless Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global seaway that has held up global supply chain traffic since the war began in February.

As a result of the war, several data centers in the region have already been hit by missiles.

Iranian missiles hit an Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center in Bahrain and an Oracle data center in Dubai. Last week, Iran threatened technology companies including Nvidia and Apple by name.
