Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for a further 12 months.

The 33-year-old’s previous contract with Man United was due to expire at the end of the season.

Maguire’s new contract was signed after he was recalled to the England national team for the March international match and played in both games, raising expectations that he will be included in manager Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.

Harry Maguire was the hero of Manchester United’s victory over Liverpool this season, but he missed out on a glorious chance to win the title in the same game at the start of 2025.

Maguire has started every game since Michael Carrick took over as manager in January and has helped Manchester United move into third place in the Premier League, losing just one of their 10 games.

After signing his new contract, the player told the club’s website: “Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honor. It’s a responsibility that I take pride in for myself and my family every day.”

“I am delighted to be able to extend my career at this great club for at least eight seasons, continue to play in front of our special supporters and create even more great moments together.

“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting team. The determination across the club to fight for major trophies is clear for all to see and we are confident that together our best moments remain ahead of us.”

Maguire’s new deal marks his eighth season at Man United, having joined from Leicester in August 2019 for £80 million, which remains a world record for a defender.

The former Hull defender won the FA Cup and League Cup during his seven years at Old Trafford, making 266 appearances in all competitions and scoring 17 goals.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox added: “Harry embodies the mentality and resilience needed to perform at Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings valuable experience and leadership to our young and ambitious team.”

“Harry, like everyone at the club, is fully determined to help Manchester United achieve regular and sustained success.”

Koby Mainu is also close to agreeing a new contract at Old Trafford, which will include a significant pay rise.

The proposal for the 20-year-old player is a five-year contract until 2031. United hope his new contract better reflects his progress and current situation in the first team.

His current contract was signed in 2023 when he was only 17 years old.

Analysis: Maguire could have left without Carrick’s nomination

Danial Khan of Sky Sports News:

Harry Maguire has become a cult hero at Manchester United.

It’s easy to forget and ignore Maguire’s journey at the club since August 2019, when he signed for £80 million, then a world record fee for a defender.

He was appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as soon as he arrived at United, but it felt like he was quickly stripped of the same captaincy by Erik ten Hag, who preferred Bruno Fernandes.

After a strong start to his United career, Maguire was forced to fight back. His goal was not only to win the approval of the coach at the time, but also the approval of the audience he was playing in front of.

Whether it was during Manchester United’s pre-season tour in Melbourne or being booed during England duty in Ireland, Maguire could have chosen an easy exit.

He could have left in the summer of 2023, with West Ham keen to pursue him, but he has decided to stay and fight for his place.

His last 18 months are perhaps the most emblematic of his United career. He adapted to a flawed system under manager Ruben Amorim and made an impression, but still produced moments that United fans will remember for a long time.

Whether it was Maguire’s 7-6 aggregate win against Lyon in extra-time in the Europa League at Old Trafford last season, or Maguire’s Ronaldinho-like dribbling on the right flank against Bilbao a few rounds later, his crosses were largely responsible for the first goal of United’s impressive away performances.

Back this season, the win against Liverpool ensured United secured their first win at Anfield since 2016.

Since Carrick arrived in January, Maguire has started every game, including two memorable performances in back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Arsenal.

It is no exaggeration to say that the centre-back’s future was even more uncertain under Amorim and a farewell was likely, but since Carrick returned to the club he has repeatedly insisted and stressed the importance of Maguire’s experience and leadership.

For Maguire, this is the next chapter in what has become a fascinating career, although it looks like these two qualities cannot be lost if United continue to build for next season. One is that whenever it ends at Old Trafford, it will be filled with praise not only from within Old Trafford but also from outside.
