US President Donald Trump has agreed to suspend plans to bomb Iran for two weeks after threatening that “an entire civilization will perish tonight” if the Iranian government did not meet his demands.
On Tuesday night, within hours of the planned attack, President Trump announced on his platform Truth Social that he had reversed course.
He acknowledged that Pakistan had brokered a settlement, but warned that it was conditional on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
“Based on my conversations with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, they tonight request that they suspend the destructive forces sent to Iran and agree to a two-week halt in bombings and attacks on Iran, conditioned on the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the full, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote.
The message was posted online at 6:32pm ET (midnight Japan time), less than an hour and a half before President Trump’s attack deadline of 8pm (midnight Japan time).
There was speculation throughout the day that Mr. Trump would extend the deadline, as he has many times in recent weeks.
But tensions rose on Tuesday as the deadline approached and after President Trump himself posted a threatening message on social media that morning.
“Tonight, an entire civilization will perish, never to rise again,” President Trump wrote at the time. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”
He added that the evening deadline would mark “one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the world.”
However, it remains unclear to what extent President Trump will refrain from a full-scale military attack.
President Trump has previously threatened to blow up power plants, bridges and other civilian infrastructure, an act that many legal experts have said constitutes a war crime.
In a message Tuesday night, the U.S. president again claimed victory over Iran and said Iran had presented a workable ceasefire proposal.
“This will be a two-sided ceasefire,” President Trump wrote.
“The reason for doing so is because we have already met and exceeded all military objectives and are very close to a final agreement on long-term peace and peace in the Middle East with Iran. We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran that we believe is a viable basis for negotiations.”
President Trump said he would spend the next two weeks finalizing a deal with Iran. But he expressed optimism that all past differences have been resolved.
President Trump said, “Almost all of the various issues of the past have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran.”
“We are honored that this long-term issue is nearing a resolution,” he added.
This is breaking news. Details will be announced later.
